Prolong the life of your carpet

Written by Emily Ashton | Aug 12, 2020 8:14:47 AM

No matter how good you maintain the cleanliness of your workplace, if the carpet is not well maintained, your workplace won’t look presentable either. All carpet ages over time but it's an expensive endeavour to get new carpet installed.

We have 9 tips to help you extend the life of your current carpet!

Here are our top tips to help your company maintain and extend the life of your carpet:

Use floor mats at entry points to your building

These can remove a considerable amount of dirt from shoes and prevent it from being dragged inside onto your carpets.

You can also use mats inside your entrance doors, they should ideally be water-absorbent to prevent moisture on people’s shoes from being transferred onto carpeting.

Use protective mats inside especially under chairs and in high traffic areas

Your carpet will start to wear away in high traffic areas, such as hallways and under office chairs, however you can use mats to help protect your carpets from excess abrasion.

Clean your carpet regularly

Have a regular cleaning schedule where the carpets get vacuumed, this will help in keeping your carpets in good condition by quickly removing dirt, insects, crumbs and dust.

Clean spills immediately

Spills that have not been completely removed can lead to a build up of mould which can cause your carpets to smell. Depending on the substance the spill may also stain the carpet.

Rearrange your furniture periodically

Rearranging the furniture will help to change high traffic areas. Parts of the carpet that have been covered up will appear cleaner than areas that have been exposed.

Replace the padding under the carpet

Padding under your carpet helps to absorb the impact of foot traffic on your carpet and protect it from damage.

Insect proof your carpet

Insects can decide to burrow in your carpets, To remedy, vacuum your carpets and apply a spray or powder designed to target the insect in question, and once dry, give it another vacuum.

Make sure the surrounding areas are clean

It’s no good keeping your carpets spotlessly clean when the rest of the workplace isn't. Places such as the kitchen tiled floor is a combination of dust and food particles. Transferring the dirt from your tiled or linoleum floors to your carpet is easy to do as it can be tracked through on unsuspecting feet, especially when it’s the type of flooring that doesn’t show dirt easily.
